Something I just learned from one of John’s emails this afternoon:

“About 70 calories of healthy fat just before you eat — that’s 6 walnuts, 12 almonds, or 20 peanuts — can trick you into thinking you’re full. Eating good fats stimulates the production of cholecystokinin (CCK), a hormone that tells your brain you’ve had enough to eat and then keeps you feeling full by slowing the emptying of your stomach. So when you sit down for a meal, you’ll eat for pleasure, not for hunger, and you’ll be likely to eat less.”

I have a few friends who suffer from bipolar disorders and I happened across this yesterday. Thought I’d share as it seems interesting (confession: I’ve not reviewed them entirely, but thought there may be some truth to glean from them).

I’m particularly referring to the “How To Heal Bipolar Mania” videos.

Anyone have any input on things like this? I’d certainly like to help out as it seems like this is becoming more common than perhaps it should be.

From Reuters: Wider nutrition labeling systems headed to stores in U.S.

I certainly think that this is a smart and appropriate approach if done properly.

From the article: “ONQI takes into account a number of factors in assigning a score of 1 to 100 for each food, including negatives like the amount of saturated fat, sugar and cholesterol in a food, and positives like fiber, nutrients, omega 3 fatty acids and the quality of the proteins.”

I have to agree, we shouldn’t need a PhD in order to know what we should and should not consume in our modern day menagerie of food choices. It’s nuts that we are presented with so many varieties and have no knowledge of how they’ll affect our bodies. I think steps should be taken to go even further, however this is a step in the right direction. Perhaps I should share my thoughts sometime on this…

Wow!

I’m so glad to see my previous post pondering the possible validity of burning salt water seeing some proof and actual advancement!

Here’s some text from engadget.com:
http://www.engadget.com/2007/09/11/can-saltwater-be-burned-as-fuel/

“A gentleman from Erie named John Kanzius made a somewhat “shocking” discovery while he was working on a radio-wave generator he had developed for the treatment of cancer. While attempting to desalinate sea water using radio frequencies, he noticed flashes, and within a few days, had saltwater burning in a test-tube as if it were a candle. The discovery spawned interest from the scientific community, mostly concerned with whether or not the water could be used as a fuel, and of course, healthy doses of disbelief. Last week, a Penn State University chemist named Rustum Roy held a demonstration proving that the science is sound, noting that the water doesn’t burn, though the radio frequencies weaken the bonds holding together the salt, releasing hydrogen which is ignited when exposed to the RF field. Mr. Kanzius and Dr. Roy say the question now is the efficiency of the energy, and are presenting the technology to the US Department of Defense and Department of Energy to investigate how useful the technology will be. Of the plentiful maybe-fuel (which apparently burns so hot it can melt test-tubes) Dr. Roy says, “This is the most abundant element in the world. It is everywhere,” and (without recognition of the poetic irony, as far as we can tell), “Seeing it burn gives me chills.” Check the TV report after the break to see the water in action.”
